SWOS membership is available to all career grade ophthalmologists working in the South West of England and South Wales. Ophthalmologists in training grades are eligable for Associate Membership.

SWOS Research Prizes

 

The Society welcomes submissions for the annual SWOS research prizes. These are awarded to Ophthalmology trainees in the South West and South Wales for the best submissions. For details of previous winners see the winners page in this section »

The next meeting for prizes to be awarded is the SWOS meeting in Bristol 15th November 2019. Please submit entries by Monday 4th November to Prof Andy McNaught, c/o andy.mcnaught@btopenworld.com.

Prizes are awarded in three categories following judging on the day of the meeting, they are currently as follows:

• ARVO presentation- £1500*
• Best published paper - £500
• Best oral presentation at Bristol SWOS meeting - 1st prize £300, 2nd prize £200

The following material will be accepted in each of the three prize categories.

• Basic science and clinical research
• Audit
• Case reports

*From 2012, the Society decided to sponsor a meritorious research prize to be awarded for the best research submitted to the Society in the year of the award for the purpose of attending the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) annual meeting the following year to present the research. The award is contingent upon the research being accepted for presentation by ARVO.

Publication

 

This prize will be awarded for the best publication submitted:

• Whose first author is in a training grade
• Which is a clinical or scientific paper (not a letter or abstract)
• In a peer-reviewed journal
• With a publication date or letter of acceptance date less than one year prior to the date of the SWOS meeting to which it is submitted. This includes publication in digital journals and online advance publication for traditional journals.
• Not previously submitted to SWOS
• The monetary value of the prize will be decided upon by the Society and may vary from time to time. It is to be shared between the authors of training grade.

Oral presentation

 

These prizes are awarded for the best oral presentation at the SWOS academic meeting:

• Whose first author is in a training grade
• The monetary value of the prize will be decided upon by the judges and may vary from time to time. It is to be shared between the authors of training grade.
